The basic care needs of a Chihuahua include five steps. Feeding, Grooming, Training, Exercising, and Vet care. Each of these steps is equally important for your chihuahua, so don’t miss any of them. Let’s check them out in detail.

How to Take Care of Chihuahua Dogs

Chihuahuas are high-energy dogs and need platters full of protein. So you have to choose some high-quality dry dog foods that contain at least 30% protein inside. Also, keep in mind that dog food should not contain a high amount of salt, as salt can cause heart and kidney problems in your tiny dogs. But if you want to treat your dogs to whole foods, then you can go for real meats like- chicken, lamb, and fish. Also, you can add vegetables or fruits like potatoes, peas, carrots, raspberries, blueberries, and banana wedges for a well-rounded diet.

But keep in mind, Chihuahuas have a small digestive system. So they need at least 3 to 4 meals in small portions per day to maintain their diet. Also, don’t leave the dog food down the whole day, as overfeeding your dogs can lead them to obesity problems and many serious health concerns.

Chihuahuas’ grooming list contains a lot of regular and frequent tasks. Starting from brushing to dental care, everything has to be taken care of properly, as grooming needs are especially connected to health issues. First of all, brushing depends on the coat of your chihuahua.

If your chihuahua has a smooth velvety coat, then a weekly brush session with a rubber grooming glove or soft-stiffened brush will be enough for them. And for long-coated ones, at least three brushing sessions weekly are required to prevent hair matting and remove loose hair. For that, you can use a pin brush, fine-toothed or stainless steel comb.

With that, you have to bathe your chi babies once every two months. For bathing, it is recommended to use dog-safe shampoos and lukewarm water to avoid any kind of skin issues. Moreover, Chihuahuas are prone to dental issues, so regular teeth brushing is required for your chis too. And don’t forget their ears and eyes. Whenever these body parts of a chihuahua get dirty, you have to clean them up with soft cotton balls and special solutions. Also, the nails of chi dogs need to be trimmed frequently as they grow very fast.

Training is an important part of every pet’s care. As chihuahuas are new to your house, some important rules should be taught on the very first days, such as house training, feeding schedule, or what they are not allowed to do. If you don’t start training from the first day, your chihuahua can become a destructive brat. Problems like- destructive chewing, barking, or house potty will annoy you. And punishing your dog that time won’t help you either. Those who are not able to train chihuahuas on their own can enroll their dogs in puppy kindergarten or obedience training classes. Also, joining classes will be a good way to teach your chihuahuas to socialize.

As said before, chihuahuas are highly active dogs, so they need regular exercise and playtimes. Daily walks for 20 to 30 minutes are recommended to keep your dogs healthy. Also, give them different play toys, and chew toys to keep their mind stimulated. Also, you should join their playtime as it can help to build your bonds with dogs.

Preventive Veterinary Care

Spaying or neutering is a very common health concern that should be done at an early age for pets. It helps to improve your chihuahua’s life quality and prevent many health issues. With that, you have to vaccinate your chihuahuas at puppy age. Vaccinations like- canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 2, and rabies are recommended for all dogs. Also, as chihuahuas easily get sick because of parasites, you have to give them deworming medicines frequently. Concern with the vet to know how many times you have to give the medicine.
